When WotC announced that Pioneer will be brought back to the competitive spotlight over half a year ago, I had some mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I’ve been playing Pioneer from literal day one (IIRC I was one of the first ten people on the planet to 5-0 a Pioneer league), and spent countless hours playing it from its inception in late 2019 up to Regional PT1 weekend in Brussels and later the beginning of Covid pandemic just a few short weeks thereafter. On the other hand, I haven’t touched the format since WotC banned Inverter, Breach, Kethis and Walking Ballista in August of 2020, and every time I saw any glimpses of Pioneer, either on Twitter or Twitch, I was glad that I don’t have to dive headfirst into it and can stick to my beloved Modern.
